Video 009 Overcoming 'known' blocking beliefs
Use this solution
When the nature of the blocking belief is clear. Otherwise first clarify what the belief may be (see Video 010), and then try using the solutions shown in this video or in Video 010.

What this covers
Case of a woman bullied at work and with a history of physical and emotional violence by her father. The therapist started with the childhood experiences and during processing of the worst of these, the client became blocked – no longer able to ‘see’ what happened next – and the processing stopped. The video shows several ways of getting over this problem where the nature of the block is clear.
How long

- If standard protocol stalls in seeking to work on a target, and it’s clear what the block is about, first make changes to mode/speed/ direction of BLS designed to tax the working memory.
- If that makes no difference try using a version of one or more of these four
questions designed to suggest or access new information contrary to the
blocking belief:
✓ Would it be alright with you if you did get over this problem. If the answer is ‘Yes’, say ‘Go with that.’ and do BLS. Repeat if necessary.
✓ What would you prefer to think about yourself in relation to this problem? If the client provides a relevant positive cognition, try installing with BLS
✓ If no cognition comes forth, explore creating a strong sense of self- acceptance despite the block, using the phase, ‘Even though……I fully and completely accept myself.’ Have the client repeat this phrase several times out loud install with BLS.
✓ Ask, ‘What’s good about…..(the block) and reduce the level of positive affect with the LOPA intervention as in Video 005. - If all fail, use the full standard EMDR protocol on the block itself as in Video 010.
- When the bock has been removed go back to the original target.
What this is about: The case is about a man in his forties who has lost his family and career. He experiences extreme dysregulation, suicidal thoughts and an inability to make sustained relationships. He has a childhood of extreme neglect and abuse. The defining condition is a lack of any hope of change or relief in the future. He is unable to contemplate dealing with past and current traumas.
What you will learn: How to work, first with the future loss of hope using the standard EMDR protocol. You will also learn how to use aspects of Brief Solution Focused Therapy to create a hopeful future, if the client is unable to do so himself. This hopeful future will become the target in this first phase of the three-part therapeutic journey.
