Video 010 Overcoming unknown-hidden blocking beliefs
Use this solution
When you suspect that a blocking belief is holding up processing but you’re unclear what that blocking belief is. Use the blocking belief questionnaire to identify the block. Then, use the standard protocol to remove the block.
However, when the block is identified, it’s worth first trying the simple methods described in Video 009. For the most difficult/complex blocks, the standard EMDR protocol is likely to work best, as in this video.
Originator
We first came across the blocking belief questionnaire through Dr Jim Knipe who developed it for use with EMDR.

What this covers
Case of a middle aged man who was raped as a young teenager. He has never sought therapy until recently, but is getting very distressing flashbacks. This early experience appears to have had a profound effect on his life: never married, something of a loner, buried himself in work (he is a successful small business owner).

Removing the block after first identifing it with the questionnaire (see Wrap up)
- Go back to the original target
- Let the blocking belief become the new NC
- Find an appropriate PC and get the VOC on a scale of 1-7
- Identify the emotion(s)
- Get a SUD’s level on a scale of 0-10
- Identify the Body location for the emotion(s)
- Apply bilateral stimulation until the SUD’s goes to 0 or at least to 1
- Install the PC until the VOC goes to 7 or at least to 6
- Do body scan as normal
- When the block has been removed go back to the original target, original NC and PC and re-apply the standard protocol process.
What this is about: The case is about a man in his forties who has lost his family and career. He experiences extreme dysregulation, suicidal thoughts and an inability to make sustained relationships. He has a childhood of extreme neglect and abuse. The defining condition is a lack of any hope of change or relief in the future. He is unable to contemplate dealing with past and current traumas.
What you will learn: How to work, first with the future loss of hope using the standard EMDR protocol. You will also learn how to use aspects of Brief Solution Focused Therapy to create a hopeful future, if the client is unable to do so himself. This hopeful future will become the target in this first phase of the three-part therapeutic journey.
